Author Spotlight
J. R. Phillips
J.R. Phillips was born in Baltimore, Maryland and though she ended up a thousand miles away, she still has a healthy Edgar Allen Poe obsession. With expertise in education and psychology, Phillips takes readers into the depths of human nature --blurring the line between truth and myth. Her work feels both familiar and singular with tangible characters woven throughout dark themes.

Inquiring Minds
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What do you publish?
A: At Newton Press, we publish bold, haunting, and poetic works of fiction that live at the crossroads of myth and modernity. We are drawn to speculative, literary, and uncanny stories — especially those that illuminate something hidden, sacred, or subversive. We seek:
- Liminal fantasy and dark speculative fiction
- Weird fiction in the tradition of the unknowable
- Occult, esoteric, or ritual-infused narratives
- Gothic tales and mythic retellings
- Psychological or atmospheric horror
- Queer, class-conscious, or visionary storytelling
- And any work that blurs the line between the intimate and the infiniteWe’re particularly interested in underrepresented voices and works that challenge dominant narratives — fiction as lantern, spell, mirror, or blade.Q: How do I submit my work to Newton Press?
A: Check out our Submissions section (above) for guidelines and tips to submit to our yearly anthology, The Curious Post. We generally accept speculative fiction, art, and creative zines. If you're interested in publishing full length work, please see our general query form for unsolicited submissionsQ: Where can I buy your books and zines?
A: Our catalog is available online through many retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and more. You can also find select titles in brick-and-mortar bookstores, libraries, and at literary events.Q: Do you offer royalties for authors?
A: We believe in fairly compensating our authors. Our current compensation arrangement for TCP is a flat fee up front for art, poetry, and flash fiction, with a per word rate for short stories. For third-parties wishing to partner with Newton Press for anthologies and other works, our standard rate is 70%-30%, in favor of the author for all formats except audiobook, which we reserve a 50%-50% arrangement due to production cost and projected annuitized return.Q: Are you planning any events?
A: We’re working on hosting virtual workshops and live events. Stay tuned for updates!Q: Do you offer editing services? If so, what types of editing do you offer?
A: We provide developmental editing, line editing, and proofreading services. Whether your project needs big-picture revisions or detailed polishing, we can help you refine your manuscript to its best form. Please see our 2025 Rate Card for a summary of our most popular services.Q: Can you help with self-publishing preparation?
A: Absolutely! We can guide you through manuscript formatting, preparing for submission to publishers, or even creating a polished draft ready for self-publishing platforms. Please see the message form below to inquire about consulting to guide you through the set up of your first self-published work or for coaching.Q: Do you work with first-time authors?
A: Of course! We're happy to collaborate with authors at any stage of their journey. Our goal is to provide constructive feedback and help your unique voice shine.Q: How does your editing process work?
A: We start with a consultation to understand your goals. From there, we review your manuscript, provide a detailed edit with notes, and include an optional follow-up call to discuss next steps.Q: What’s your turnaround time?
A: Turnaround depends on the length and scope of the project. For shorter pieces (like zines or short stories), expect 1–2 weeks. For full-length manuscripts, it may take 4–6 weeks, providing there's an opening in the schedule.Q: How much do your editing services cost?
A: Please see our 2025 Rate Card for a summary of our most popular services.Q: How do I get started?
A: Easy! Contact us by using the form at the bottom of the page.
